Abstract

229,033. Slater, R. Dec. 10, 1923. Valve gear.-Inclined inlet and exhaust valves b are actuated by face cams a', a<2> on a vertical shaft a<3> through rockers c<2>, c<3>. The cams may be formed on conical faces, or may be projections formed on flat discs; they mav be arranged one above the other, or may be of different diameters, in which case one may be nested in the other as shown in Fig. 7. In a modification, two arms on each rocker shaft actuate respectively two inlet and two exhaust valves. The shaft a<3> is provided with a sliding coupling to allow for cylinder expansion. In the case of a line of cylinders, the cams are mounted on an overhead shaft, or, where there are four valves on each cylinder, on two overhead shafts. Regulating.-The cam discs may be adjusted angularly for timing either by serrations engaging one another, or by pins engaging staggered holes.
