Abstract

325,643. Highfield, F. W. Dec. 29, 1928. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In a three-cylinder radial engine all the valves are actuated by the same part of a single cam, which is arranged to open simultaneously the exhaust valve of one cylinder and the inlet valve of the next preceding cylinder in the order of firing. In the engine shown in Fig. 1 the cylinders fire in the order 1, 3, 2, and the exhaust and inlet valves a, b are actuated by a single cam c rotating at half speed in the opposite direction to the crank-shaft or engine. The exhaust valve is timed to open 240‹ before the opening of the inlet valve of the same cylinder, and therefore simultaneously with the opening of the inlet valve of the preceding cylinder, so that the cam may simultaneously open the exhaust valve and inlet valve respectively of adjacent cylinders, for example by means of levers f, g and tappets. The cam c may have internal teeth driven by planet gearing from the crank-shaft. Specification 168,371, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], is referred to.
