Abstract

Machine guns; ordnance breech-mechanism; design.-Guns such as are described in Specfications 131,016 and 224,927 are provided at the muzzle end of the barrel with a special form of gas baffle for imparting the forward movement to the barrel on discharge. The baffle attachment includes gas outlets 6, Fig. 4, adapted to direct the escaping gases forwardly on to the exposed rear surface of a baffle-plate or dish 5 connected to the barrel 2, with or without slight play against the action of a spring 15. The baffle-plate, which extends radially beyond parts of the gun in the immediate rear, has its front and rear surfaces exposed to the atmosphere. The baffle may have conical enlargements 8, 12, Fig. 2, forming one or more internal baffles 10, 13 in advance of the gas outlets. In a modification, the baffle is mounted on a sleeve which slides on the barrel through a limited distance to unlock the barrel before moving it forwards.
