Abstract
Apparatus 1 for conveying a liquid from one level to a higher (in use) level, comprises a flexible conduit 2, one way valve 3 at or adjacent one end 4 of the conduit 2 having a body 5 with an aperture 6 for ingress of liquid into the body 5 and a valve device 7 captive in the body 5 and operable to permit flow of liquid through the aperture into the body 5 and a dispenser 8 for liquid adapted to be located in the conduit 2 at an end 9 thereof remote from the valve 3. The conduit 2 is printed with liquid and, on immersion of the valve 3 in the liquid and relative movement thereof relative to the remote end, liquid is drawn into the conduit 2 through the valve 3 for emission from the remote end 9. <IMAGE>
Description
SIPHON APPARATUS
The apparatus relates to siphon apparatus, particularly an apparatus for conveying a liquid from one level to a higher (in use) level.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for conveying a liquid from one level to a higher (in use) level, comprising a flexible conduit, a one way valve at or adjacent one end of the conduit having a body with an aperture for ingress of liquid into the body and a valve device captive in the body and operable to permit flow of liquid through the aperture into the body, and a dispenser for liquid adapted to be located in the conduit at an end thereof remote from the valve, the arrangement being such that on immersion of the valve in a liquid and relative movement thereof relative to the remote end, liquid is drawn into the conduit through the valve for emission from the remote end.
The valve may comprise the valve device and a one piece body which are formed integrally. This provides a simple construction.
The valve may comprise a two piece body within which is capitvely received the valve device. This is a practical alternative.
One piece of the body may comprise a closure carrying the aperture. The two pieces may be sealed together to provide a sealed unitary body. This provides positive capture of the valve device.
The two pieces may be sealed together by welding, particularly as the body may be made of plastic.
The valve device may comprise an elastomer, such as rubber.
According to a further aspect, the invention provides apparatus as hereinbefore defined including a liquid dispensing means mounted on the remote end.
Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a schematic side elevational view of apparatus for conveying a liquid from one level to a higher (in use) level.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown apparatus 1 for conveying a liquid from one level to a higher (in use) level, comprising a flexible conduit 2, one way valve 3 at or adjacent one end 4 of the conduit 2 having a body 5 with an aperture 6 for ingress of liquid into the body 5 and a valve device 7 captive in the body 5 and operable to permit flow of liquid through the aperture into the body 5, and a dispenser 8 for liquid adapted to be located in the conduit 2 at an end 9 thereof remote from the valve 3, the arrangement being such that on immersion of the valve 3 in a liquid and relative movement thereof relative to the remote end, liquid is drawn into the conduit 2 through the valve 3 for emission from the remote end 9.The conduit 2 may comprise a flexible hose of suitable material such as rubber or plastic, and the dispensing device is shown as a brush, though it could alternatively comprise a spray nozzle which may be adjustable to provide a variable spray "cone". The valve 3 is shown as having a one piece body of say plastic formed integrally with the captive valve device 7 which is otherwise free to oscillate to and fro in the direction of the arrow 'X' in order to open or obturate the aperture 6. Alternatively, the valve device 7 may be inserted in the body 5, through an open end opposite (in use) the hose, the end then being closed by a closure 10 with the aperture 6, which closure 10 is then secured integrally with the body as by welding to provide a sealed unitary body with the captive valve device 7 as before. The body and closure 10 thus form parts of a two piece body, and may be made of plastic, which facilitates sealing connection as by welding, such as high frequency welding. The valve means 7 is suitably an elastomer such as rubber.
In use, the conduit 2 is primed with liquid such as water so as to expel air contained in the conduit. This can be achieved by forming a 'U' of the conduit and filling it until full with water. The valve 3 is then inserted by an integral connector or spigot 11 in one end of the conduit and the brush in the remote end. The end 4 with the valve 3 is then inserted in say a bucket of water, at one level say the ground. The brush is then held at a higher level to wash say a vehicle, the valve device 7 preventing water from flowing out of the conduit into the bucket (which is not shown). In order to wash the vehicle, say a car or boat, water is drawn from the bucket by oscillating the brush over the vehicle, in a side to side motion or in a generally curved path, say ellipsoidal. This results in liquid being emitted from the end 4, and hence from the brush (which has a head with apertures in a surface in which the bristles are rooted).
