Abstract
225,407. Weissmann, G. Jan. 7, 1924. Eleotrodes; electro. lytes. - A bipolar agglomerate f o r liquid or dry cells comprises a negative electrodes a of sheet zinc or other metal covered with a permeable envelope b of paper or linen and bent as shown to provide compartments in which are placed permeable bags c containing the depolarizer d and a rod or rods g of carbon or other material forming the positive electrode. The whole is strongly compressed, enclosed in a permeable bag f, and placed in a vessel h containing the electrolyte, or, for use in a dry cell, the agglomerate is forced a tight fit into a container, and electrolyte added for absorption by the depolarizer, the top of the container being finally sealed with wax &c. When the positive electrode is of carbon, to avoid fracture of the rods during compression, dummy rods of wood are used and atferwards removed, carbon rods of slightly larger diameter being then forced into the holes left by the dummy rods. Preferably the zinc plate is coated with a paste of electrolyte (e.g. ammonium chloride) and flour of rye or rice, or a sheet of filter paper or linen impregnated with such paste may be placed between the zinc a and its envelope b. A flat form of agglomerate is described having a single compartment formed by a U-form piece of zinc. The invention is applicable to cells of any type, a cell using zinc and copper as electrodes, copper oxide as depolarizer, and potash as electrolyte being men. tioned.
