Abstract
225,177. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Baker, W. R. G.). Nov. 21, 1923, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-In a circulating-liquid cooling system for a discharge tube adapted to be immersed wholly or partly in a chamber through which the liquid flows and which is located below the liquid head, a valve mechanism controlling the supply of liquid is interlocked with a switch so that the circuit is closed when the valve is opened and conversely. As shown in Fig. 1, the radiator 2 is connected through a pipe 8 and a valve 9 with a chamber 6, in which the anode of the thermionic tube 7 is immersed. The other end of the chamber 6 is connected through a valve 10, a flow indicator 12, and a pipe 13, with the pump 3, which is driven through an insulating coupling 27 by a motor 4 insulated from a base which is mounted on insulators 1. A thermometer 16 is mounted in or against the return pipe 34 from the pump to the radiator. A valve 15 is arranged in shunt to the pump, and is normally closed, but may be opened so that water may pass from the pipe 13 to the return pipe 34 without passing through the pump. The valves 9, 10 are interlocked by means of an arm 17 from which projects a lever 18 carrying the blade 19 of a knife switch in the anode circuit. When the valves 9, 10 are closed the switch 19 is opened, and the tube may be removed from the chamber 6 without loss of water from the system. The tube is mounted in the chamber 6 by means of a collar 23, Fig. 2, at the end of the anode 21, engaging with a clamp 2 consisting of two sliding strips 24, 25 which are pressed against the collar bv a screwed head 26. In order to prevent a discharge outside the tube between the anode and the grid terminal 28 or a cap 29, the head is shaped so as to extend outwards, and is formed with a rim from which any discharge takes place.
