Abstract

A batten joint enabling timber battens to be inserted from either side to produce a continuous length of material having integral continuity of structural strength once battens on each side are fixed to two or more supporting/underlying structural members. Joints are located, contrary to traditional construction, between the supporting/underlying structural members.

Description

TITLE: ROOFING BATTEN JOINTING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION PRODUCT:- Environmentally friendly, "tree saving" device for "push-fit" butt jointing of roof tiling battens between rafters/trusses.
USE & BENEFITS:- Allows roof tiling battens to be used as "continuous" length, eliminating all cutting and timber wastage where traditionally battens are cut to join on rafters/trusses. Traditional construction often allows wastage of up to 590mm per batten length. This could provide a 10% timber cost saving for this item in traditional pitched roof construction. NB battens would still require cutting at barges but generous "off-cuts" could be re-used. Virtually all battens could be fixed without the use of a saw giving considerable savings on carpenters time and aiding safety.
SPECIFICATION:- Economic, thin walled, rectangular P.V.C.
jointing socket with centre locator to permit "push-f it" batten embedment of 4Omm from each side. Item manafactured to suit nominal 38 x 22, 38 x 25 and 50 x 25 mm sawn softwood roof tiling battens. Back and underside (to prevent tile deformation) to be oversized and fitted with flexible fins or spines to provide friction grip and accommodate batten size variation; eg for commonest batten size of 38 x 25 mm tolerance range 36 x 23 - 40 x 27 would need to be catered for flexible fins or spines to have champered "lead-in" to assist "push-fit".

Claims (8)

Mi
1 A batten joint to facilitate jointing of roofing or other timber battens by socketing.
2 A batten joint as claimed in claim 2.01 wherein a central locator is provided to restrict appropriate batten embedment into the receiving socket from each side.
3 A batten joint as claimed in claim 2.01 or 2.02 having visual means of checking battens are correctly located/embedded into each receiving socket.
4 A batten joint as claimed in claim 2.02 or 2.03 incorporating on one or more sides material designed to be flexible or compressible to provide frictional grip and/or take up tolerance in timber batten size variation. Alternatively incorporating on one or more sides material designed to be rigid to provide frictional grip and/or take up tolerance in timber batten size variation by "digging into" (embedment) the timber batten.
5 A batten joint as claimed in any proceeding claim incorporating "push fit" principles for jointing timber battens.
6 A batten joint as claimed in any preceding claim sectioned excentrically to incorporate walling material to one or more sides of minimal thickness to prevent deformation of slates, tiles, shingles or other finishing material applied to the battens.
7 A batten joint as claimed in any preceding claim designed specifically for jointing roofing or other timber battens between supporting/underlying rafters, trusses, counter battens, studs or other structural members.
8 A batten joint substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-6 of the accompanying drawings.
