Abstract
A vehicle wheel-over disc 1 is made of light alloy and provided with sockets 12 to receive the same conventional nuts 16 or bolts as are used for securing the wheel 7 to a wheel-bearing hub. <IMAGE>
Description
1 - 1 VEHICLE WHEEL COVER DISC
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a wheel-cover disc for a vehicle.
It is known to make vehicle wheels of light alloy to reduce their weight and improve the performance of the vehicle and also the appearance of the wheel. Since light-alloy wheels are relatively expensive, they are used mainly for medium and high-quality cars.
It is an object of the present invention therefore to provide a wheel-cover disc for fixing to a vehicle wheel which is equivalent in appearance to a light-alloy wheel but is much cheaper, so that it can be used on a wider price range of vehicles including the lowest in the range.
Accordingly, the invention provides a vehicle wheel-cover disc which is made of light alloy and has means for attaching it to a rim of a vehicle wheel.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a wheel-cover disc of the invention and, Figure 2 is a sectional view of the disc, along line II-II in Figure 1.
is Figures 1 and 2 show a wheel-cover disc 1 made of light alloy, preferably aluminium alloy. Disc 1, which is in one-piece, has a flat circular central portion 3 and an annular intermediate portion 4 which is inclined towards the external periphery of te disc 1 and rearwardly of the frontal plane of the central portion 3. The intermediate portion 4 is joined to an annular portion 5 adapted to bear on a peripheral annular portion 6 of a conventional steel wheel rim 7, part of which is indicated in dotted lines. The intermediate annular portion 4 has a number of spaced-apart trapezoidal apertures 8 for ventilating the wheel rim 7 located behind them, whereas the circular portion 3 has four apertures 9 equally spaced apart at 900 intervals, opposite which the frontal surface of portion 3 has corresponding annular cavities 10 of larger diameter adapted to receive the top annular outer edge 11 of respective cylindrical sockets 12, advantageously made of steel. The depth of the sockets 12 is such that they fit without clearance between the central portion 3 of disc 1 and the central section of the vehicle wheel 7 in the zone containing the conventional components for securing the wheel to the wheel-bearing hub (not shown). More particularly, the securing components comprise threaded screw studs 15 which are permanently attached to the wheel-bearing hub (not shown), and respective nuts 16 screwed on to them inside the sockets 12. The studs 15 extend through the perforated end of each socket 12 and thus rigidly connect the disc 1 to the wheel 7.
The central zone of portion 3 is formed with a hole 18 adapted to receive a circular plug member 19 which has snap-fastening feet 20 and a front surface which can have marking thereon.
The advantages of the disc of the invention are that it has the external appearance and characteristics of a light-alloy wheel which is much more expensive, but can easily be attached to a conventional steel wheel rim using the same attaching means as are used for securing the steel vehicle wheel to its wheel-bearing hub. The attachment is therefore secure and reliable for a long period, even after repeated assembly and dismantling. Also, the sockets 12 can be separately replaced by others of a different depth so that a given wheel disc 1 can be fitted to a vehicle wheel rim 7 of the same diameter but different shape.
It will be appreciated that modifications and variations to the shape and dimensions of the disc 1 can be made to those specified without departing from the inventive idea. For example, in the means for attaching the disc 1 to the wheel rim 7, the screw studs 15 and nuts 16 can be replaced by conventional bolts screwed into threaded holes in the wheel-bearing hub and threaded into the sockets 12 so that the bolt heads bear against the ends of the sockets 12. Also, the means for attaching the disc 1 to the rim 7 can include conventional means for preventing accidental unscrewing.
