Bore-hole apparatus.-In means for raising or lowering tools, casings, &c. from or into wells comprising clamping means for the tools &c., and suspension links detachably secured to the clamping means, the clamping means comprising two relatively movable portions secured by latching means provided with an actuating yoke, means are provided to engage the actuating yoke to secure the latch from movement. The clamping means comprises parts 21, 25, held in closed position by a yoke-shaped latch 26 pivoted at 27 near the inner surface of the part 25 and pressed by springs 31 into wedging engagement with the shoulder 30 of the part 21; a pivoted member 33 pressed upwardly by a spring carries a stop 36 adapted to hold the latch 26 in either its engaged or disengaged positions. The upper part 55 of the bore of the clamp is of reduced size. In Fig. 10, the latch stop comprises a drop-pawl 40 adapted on closing of the parts 21, 25 to contact with the tool &c. and to be dropped into position to lock the latch against undesired release. In a modification, Fig. 4, the latch member 43 is pivoted at 42 near the outer surface of the part 25. The part 21 is provided with opposed hooks 22 adapted to receive suspension bails &c. 16 ; pivoted members 48 lock the bails against undesired release. The upper and lower parts of the bails are provided with integral or other crossbars 18 preventing undesired release of the bails from the hooks 22 or the lifting hook and permitting use of the bails to give a jarring effect.
