[Class 78 (iv).] Means for handling pipes, casing, &c. during well-drilling comprise a body 1 with ears 2 to receive lifting links which are locked by pins inserted in lower lugs 4, and a gate 7 with a hinge lug 13 fitting in a recess 14 in the body and held by a pivot pin 6. In closed position a shoulder 12 on the free end of the gate is supported on a lug 10 on the body, and the gate is locked by a latch yoke 39 pivoted to an ear 38 on the body and provided with a spring-pressed latch lever 47 controlling a bevelled latch pin 49 guided in the yoke 39 and adapted to engage a recess 57 in the gate. The bore of the elevator has stepped tapered surfaces 17, 18 co-operating with similar faces on serrated slips 16 which are pressed upwardly by springs 28 surrounding pins 26 connecting upper and lower lugs 25, 24 on the slips ; the lower lugs 24 are guided in recesses 31..Each slip carries a pin 32 pressed upwardly by a spring 33 whereby when the elevator is closed round a pipe &c. and raised, the pins 32 engage a pipe collar and move the slips downwardly in the elevator to grip the pipe and take the load ; welded stop pieces 36 limit motion of the pins 36.
