Cylinders, construction of.- To prevent carbonized oil and escaping gas from contaminating the oil lubricating the external cross-head of a single-acting twostroke cycle engine, a detachable cover B, having a stuffing-box D for the piston rod, is provided and the space E enclosed by it is kept in constant communication with either the scavenging air space F, as shown, or the exhaust pipe. The invention is especially applicable to engines of the opposed-piston type and a cover B mav be at either or both ends of the cylinder. A drain pipe H having a cock may be provided.
