Abstract

Ammonia is removed from gases containing it by passing the gas through a solution acidified with phosphoric acid or ammonium dihydrogen phosphate under such conditions that crystals of diammonium hydrogen phosphate separate, the operation being performed in a manner similar to the treatment of such gases with sulphuric acid to obtain ammonium sulphate. The separated diammonium phosphate may be heated to obtain ammonia and the acid phosphate which is used again. The heating of the diammonium phosphate may be effected with superheated steam the degree of superheat being so chosen that on cooling the issuing ammoniacal vapour the ammonia condenses to a concentrated solution with the water condensed from the steam present.
