Description

2220053 40635/wsr TITLE Cokeless anR-fired cunola furnace.
This invention relates to a cokeless gas-fired cupola furnace and particularly to a holding device for the bed material and metallic charge for the smelting and superheating of iron in metallurgical works.
DE 2204042 discloses a gas-fired cupola furnace for the smelting of iron, which consists of a vertical shaft constructed as a superheating chamber and discharge column of equal diameter and having a grate of at least two parallel water-cooled bars encased in refractory material and serving to hold the bed material and is metallic charge as well as the additional components.
The combustion of the gas is accompanied by the formation of an oxidising furnace atmosphere which leads to the creation, in the discharge column, of a slag containing iron oxide. The iron oxide content of the slag amount to up to 50% and adversely affects the thermodynamic conditions in the discharge column zone of the furnace. A further drawback is that the slag containing iron oxide flows along the refractory lining into the superheating chamber causing serious.wear on the lining in this zone and a change in the cross section of the furnace as well 2 - 40635/wsr as in the flow conditions in the smelting zone, thus c increasing the specific energy input required for the iron smelting process.
This invention seeks to reduce the cost of the iron smelting operation and particularly the input of energy involved.
According to this invention there is provided a cokeless gas-fired cupola furnace for the smelting and superheating of iron, with a holding device for the bed material and metallic charge and comprising a vertical shaft constructed as a superheating chamber and discharge column of equal diameter acnd having a grate of at least two parallel water-cooled bars, wherein the diameter of the superheating chamber is greater than that of the discharge column with the two separated by a water-cooled draining bracket and a number of water-cooled pipes having stabilising elements in the zone of the discharge column and one or more cooling elements in the zone of a refractory lining.
This invention thus offers a cokeless gas-fired cupola furnace, particularly a holding device for the bed material and metallic charge including the additional components, for the smelting and superheating of iron, ensuring constant therm9dynamic conditions in the furnace shaft and preventing a change of furnace cross section in 40635/wsr the smelting zone. The provision of stabilising elements in the pipes in the zone of the discharge column produces between the pipes a defined free cross section which also enables slags with a higher iron oxide content to flow off into the superheating chamber. On the other hand the cooling elements provided in the zone of the refractory lining ensure a constant cross section for the furnace during the smelting process, thanks to their additional cooling effect. This constant Pross section also greatly reduces the wear suffered by the refractory lining in the smelting chamber, the thermodynamic conditions in the furnace thus remaining stable. As a result of the water-cooled draining bracket and the greater diameter of the superheating chamber the liquid iron occurring in the smelting zone and the slag are always drained into the hearth without coming in contact with the refractory lining, so that the wear on this latter likewise is greatly reduced.
The advantages of the cokeless gas-fired cupola furnace according to the invention reside in a reduction of the thermal losses in the furnace shaft and of the specific energy input involved. The serviceability of the cupola furnace is thus improved.
The invention will.be explained in more detail with reference to an example shown in the drawing. The 40635/wsr drawing shows a cross section through part of the shaft of a cupola furnace.
It may be seen that the diameter of the superheating chamber 1 is greater than that of the discharge column 2, and that the two are separated by the water-cooled draining bracket 4 as well as eleven water-cooled pipes 5 which have a number of stabilising elements 6 in the zone of the discharge column 2 and two cooling elements 7 in the zone of the refractory lining 3. These constructional modifications make it possible for the cupola furnace, for example in the smelting of GGL and GGG base iron, to operate with an average specific smelting performance of 8 to 10 t/h up to 6000 t of cold charge without repairs and without renewal of the refractory lining in the zone of the shaft.
