Abstract
1420873 Grate bars in shaft furnaces HAYES SHELL-CAST (DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd 1 Aug 1974 [5 May 1973] 21506/73 Heading F4B In a metal shaft furnace, particularly of the kind having an inert heat exchange bed below the charge, a supporting grid comprises parallel water cooled bar 5, at least some of which have laterally extending fins 6. The bars may be coated with refractory to give an overall diameter equal to the width across the fins. The use of finned tubes enables a smaller numbers of bars to be used without undue cooling of the melt, or rapid increase in the spacing of the bars when the refractory coating is eroded.
