Abstract

219,946. Guy, B. A. July 31, 1923, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Electromagnetic switches; electrically released switches; contacts. - In order to facilitate the opening and closing movements of a knife-blade switch, one of the faces of the usually fixed clip contacts is movable, electromagnetically, to release and admit the knife blade without friction, a spring serving normally to hold the movable cheek in the contacting position. As shown applied to an electromagnetically-operated switch or relay, the switch is brought to the closed position by energizing for a moment two electromagnets 15, 10. The electromagnet 15 attracts its armature 14 and moves the knife blade 12 into engagement with the clip contacts, which have faces 1, 2. The face 2 is carried by an armature 6 pivoted at 3, and the energization of the electromagnet 10 withdraws the face 2, against the, action of the spring 7, so as to admit the knife blade without friction. When the switch is closed, the momentary energization of the electromagnets ceases and the knife blade is frictionally held in the clip contacts against the action of the spring 16. To open the switch, the electromagnet 10 only is energized thereby releasing the friction grip. It is stated in the Specification that the movable contact face and the knife blade may be controlled by mechanical means.
