Abstract

168,021. Kendall, A. B. Aug. 18, 1920, [Convention date]. Electromagnetic switches; locking and unlocking.-A three-position relay carried by a locomotive is provided with separate electromagnetic locking means to hold the contact member in the central neutral position against vibration, release of the lock being effected by the current which operates the relay, and with gravity returning mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, the wound armature carries a disc 9 notched at 10 and provided with a crank arm pivoted to a connecting- rod 17 extending to the contact arm 18 which carries contacts 19, 20 co-operating with fixed contacts 21, 22. Normally, the parts assume the position shown with the spring-mounted armature 12 engaging the disc and locking the contact arm. When current is supplied through the relay armature it passes also through the electromagnet 15 and raises the catch, subsequently rotating the armature and maintaining the contact as long as the relay is energized. In its rotation the armature raises, by means of a segmental projection 29 carried thereby a U. shaped weight 34 guided by a roller 37, and as soon as the current is cut off the weight restones the contact-arm to the neutral position. Adjustable stops 33 act in conjunction with the projection 30 to limit the movement.
