Engines combined with steam generators.-A heat storer containing a large body of water heated by surplus steam from a plant is discharged by drawing off the water and allowing it to evaporate by reduction of pressure, the energy thus set free being used to drive a reciprocating engine or turbine, or to compress a part of the steam to a higher pressure. Hot water taken from a storer a to drive an engine c, Fig. 4, is admitted to the cylinder of the engine beneath the piston d. The engine may drive a compressor o which compresses the engine exhaust. The engine exhaust may be condensed and returned to the storer. Hot water from the storer may be evaporated in an expanding nozzle s, Fig. 5, and the steam used to drive a turbine u. The water may be rotated by inclined blades or a propeller r at the entrance to the nozzle. Water is led off from the nozzle through a pipe x. This water may drive a turbine placed between the nozzle and the guide vanes t. Steam from the nozzle may be compressed in a contracting nozzle before entering the turbine.
