Hand-gear; starting-gear. - In a convertible hand and power gear for controlling the valve-gear of an engine, the steam-power cylinder 10 is connected to an oil cataract cylinder 160 the piston of which is secured to the reversing-rod 19. The cylinder 160 has spring-pressed lift valves 21, 22 arranged in chambers communicating with the cylinder ends and which are engaged by double-ended levers 26, 27 mounted on an eccentric pin 250 on a shaft 25 connected to a hand-lever 28 mounted on the side of the hand gear. The levers 26, 27 abut fulcrum stops 261, and are raised to permit a circulation of oil in the cylinder 160 and to determine the piston speed. Leakage is made good from a reservoir 34 by a plunger 31 which is drawn out by a hand lever 32 and gradually forced in by a spring, oil passing a non-return valve to the cylinder until the lever creeps to the position shown. The piston and rod are packed by cupleathers acted on by cup-shaped annular springs held in position by rings 200. To move the gear, a lever 14 mounted on a bracket secured to the side of the hand gear and held in a central position by a spring stop, is moved to operate the valve of the cylinder 10 and the lever 28 is then operated to permit the desired motion after which the piston 16 is locked by closing valves 21, 22 and the lever 14 brought to its central position. The reversing-gear may be hand-operated by a screwed spindle 37 engaging a guided rectangular bar 39 secured to the rod 19 by a removable pin and which carries a notched disc 43 and locking-pawl 42 adjacent the wheel 38.
