Description
SPECIFICATION
Opening/closing attachment for a frame and cooperating window, door or panel which is openable and closable in the Italian fashion
The present invention concerns an opening/closing attachmentforaframe and cooperating window, door or panèl!which is openable and closable in the Italian fashionrthe upper part of which window, door or panel is projected outwardly upon opening.
A form: of fra me and panel which opens in the Italian fashion is known, which uses an attachment compris ing aone-piece pantographic strut assembly, butthis known:arrangement does not always provide an angle of opening (in particular when a blind box or housing interferes with access) sufficientto permit cleaning of theoutsidefaceofthepanel bya personfrom inside a building fitted with the frame and panel. This is becausethetravelofthestrutassemblyis limited by and abutment for protecting the frame from breakage bythe upper part of the openable panel or sash striking against the fixed frame upon excessive rotation ofthe movable panel relative to the frame.
Additionally this known type offrame and panel is not very rigid and the strut assemblies on the sides of the frame do not necessarily open through the same angle at each moment in the opening movement, giving rise to the possibility of jamming. Moreoverthe strut assembly does not act with a long operating lever in a direction from the outside inwardly, when the panel is closed against the outside framewhich means that the assembly may not be in a good sealing condition when closed,
There is thus a need fort generally improved opening/closing attachmentforsuch aframeand cooperating window, door or panel.
According to the present invention there is provided an opening/closing attachmentforaframeand cooperating window, door or panel which is openable and closable in the Italian fashion having two lateral stabilizing arms which are pivotally connected at one end to lateral uprights of the openable window, door or panel and at the other end to the fixed frame, wherein the attachment includes a pair of opening/ closing devices locatable one on each side of the openable window, door or panel, each of which devices includes, a keeper member attachable to an upper part of the fixed frame and having a ramp and, on an outsideface of the member,an oblong aperture in the form of an acute accent, a slideway attachable to the fixed frame beneath the keeper member and including afirstorserviceaperture, in its upper part, a secondorcleaning aperture in its lower part, anda stop element fixed to its lower end, a slide member which isslidable in said slideway by the guiding action of ashoewhich is fixed with respect to the slide member, which slide member includes a catch stop member having a ramp, mounted with a resilient return force towards the outside face thereof and actuable with a rotary motion over a sector of 1800 by means of a screw, and a strut memberwhich is pivotally attached to the slidable member and to a fixing means of the openable window, door or panel which strut member includes a rollerforcooperation with the oblong aperture, which roller is intended to move the upper part of the openable window door or panel out ofthe surrounding frame in the opening movement, said devices, by the rotary movement of 180 ofthestop members, permitting opening ofthe openable window, door or panel into a service position and closurethereofor opening of the openable window door or panel into a cleaning position and closure thereof.
Such an attachment enables the window to be opened for cleaning purposes through a wide angle, permitting the cleaning operation to be carried out from the building interior, even if a blind housing or box otherwise interferes with access, automatically provides for locking of the assembly in that position, for safety in the cleaning operation, and avoids the necessity for carrying out the cleaning operation from cradles suspended from outsidethe building, which is expensive.
For closing the window, door or panel a securing and locking action by a roller on a ramp is used, provided by the keeper memberwith the oblong aperture, the roller on the strut member, cooperating with the keeper member, and a fixing bracket on the openable panel which is pivotally connected to the strut member.
This providesforfirm securing of the openable panel on the fixed frame with locking in respect of vertical movement by the lateral stabilizing arms and locking in respect of the horizontal component of the movementofthe upper partofthe panel by the roller bearing against the ramp surface ofthe oblong aperture of the keeper member.
There are two options for opening the window, door or panel provided with the attachment of the invention. The first option is a service open position, for simple ventilation, using the mechanism formed by the slide member comprising a shoe, provided with a catch stop member having a ramp with a sector limiting its rotary movement to 1800 and being operated by and Allen key or other means. The shoe is slidable in the U-shaped slidewaywhich is disposed and fixed along the fixed frame and hastherethrough a first aperture in its upper part for receiving the stop member in said position.
The second option is a cleaning open position, for cleaning the outside face ofthe panel from inside a building fitted with the frame and panel, with the panel opening through an angle of about 500 with respect to the fixed frame to facilitate the cleaning operation and being automatically locked in that position to provide for safety in carrying out the operation. In that position, the ramp-bearing stop member engages in a second aperture disposed in the lower part ofthe slideway, the shoe comes to bear against a bracing memberwhich is fixed to the lower end ofthe slideway, and the show is then locked against anyfurther movement in the slideway.
The panel is moved from the cleaning open position to the closed position orto the service open position
by rotating the ramp-bearing stop member 1800 and, conversely, from the service open position to the cleaning open position by rotation through 1800 in the opposite direction, with the means for operating the stop member by rotation with an Allen key being easily accessible in the open positions.
Preferably the shoe and the lateral stabilizing arms are provided with braking means which are optionally controllableforslowing movement ofthe window door or panel towards its open positions.
For abetter understanding ofthe present invention, and to show howthe same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example to the accompanying drawings in which: Figs 1 and 2 respectively show a frame and window fitted with the attachment ofthe invention with the window in a service open position and a cleaning open position,
Fig 2a is a view in cross-section taken along line ll-ll of Fig 2 of a braking means on a pivot of a stablizing arm with the openable window, door or panel,
Fig 3 is an exploded perspective view of a device of the opening/closing attachment ofthe invention with ramp-bearing keeper member, slideway, strut member and roller and fixing bracketforthe openable window, door or panel,
Fig 3a is a cross-sectional view of a shoe showing the ramp-bearing stop member, and
Figs 4,5,6 and 7 are side views ofthe opening/ closing attachment system respectively in the closed position, in the course of movement towards the open or closed position, in a service open position and in a cleaning open position.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 a frame and window, door or panel opening in the Italian fashion hasa surrounding frame orfixed frame 3, an openable panel movable leaf or sash 2, two lateral stabilizing arms 1 and, on each side of the openable panel 2, at the level ofthe upperedge,an opening/closing attachment according to a first embodiment ofthe invention. The panel 2 may be a frame for a pane of window glass. The attachment comprises a pair of opening/closing devices 4 located one on each side of the window 2. Each device 4 includes a ramp bearing keeper member or catch plate 5 which is fixed to the upper part ofthe fixed frame 3, a slideway 8, a slide member 12which is slidable in the slideway 8, and a strut member 16 having a roller7 cooperating with the keeper member 5.
On its outside face, the keeper member5 has an oblong aperture 6 intheform of an acute accent which permits and guides rolling movement of the roller7 and which, when the roller7 is moved upwardly (see
Fig 5), provides for the window frame 2 to close onto its fixed frame 3, the roller 7 bearing against an outside profile 18 ofthe ramp configuration ofthe aperture 6.
The slideway 8 is fixed to the inside face ofthe fixed frame 3, a slideway 8, a slideway member 12 which is slidable in the slideway 8, and a strut member 16 having a roller7 cooperating with the keeper member 5.
On its outsideface, the keeper member5 has an oblong aperture 6 in the form of an acute accent which
permits and guides rolling movement of the roller7 and which, when the roller7 is moved upwardly (see
Figure 5), provides forthe windowframe 2 to close onto its fixed frame 3, the roller7 bearing against an outside profile 18 ofthe ramp configuration ofthe aperture 6.
The slideway 8 is fixed to the inside face of the fixed frame 3 and comprises a first aperture 9, referred to as theserviceaperture,in its upper part, a second aperture 10, referred to as a cleaning aperture, in its lower part, and a stop element or bracing segment 11 which is fixedtoits lower end. The slide member 12 is slidable within the slideway 8, sliding along the limb portions thereof by means of a shoe 13. The slide member 12 has a recess 17 on its outside face which, when the window 2 is opened into the service of cleaning position, forms a support abutmentforthe strut member 16 (see Figures 6 and 7).The strut member 16 is pivotally connected to the lower level of the recess 17 and to a right-angled fixing bracket 21 surrounding one ofthe upper corners ofthe openable window or panel 2. The shoe 13 comprises a catch stop member 14 (see Figure 31) having a ramp surface 23, which is mounted with a resilient return force urging it towards its outside face and which is actuated in respect of rotary movement over a sector of 1800 by a screw 15. The stop memberwasthe subject-matter of patent No.2207518. The screw 15 may be rotated by an Allen type key which permits accessfrom the interior. The shoe 13 has a controllable or adjustable brake lining or friction pad 20 which rubsagainsttheinsideface oftheslideway.Thistype of brake on a slideway is described in patent applica tion No.80 0094 which was filed on 6th May 1980 in the name ofthe present applicants and the purpose thereof is to slow the movement ofthe window frame 2towards its open positions. Farthe same purpose of providing a braking effect, the lateral stabilizing arms 1 (see Figure 21 ) have, at their pivotal mounting at the level of the panel 2 or fixed frame 3, adjustable or controllable friction brakes 19 including friction lining washers which are clamped to a greater or lesser degree depending on the braking effect required.
The mode of operation of the frame assembly is relatively simple and, as described hereinbefore, requires the use of an Allen keyto permitthe window or panel 2 to be opened to the cleaning position. With regard to the frequency with which windows are cleaned, the use of a key is not a disadvantage and this operation which comprises turning the key as indi catedbya marker S (service open position) our a marker N (cleaning open position) does not require anyparticularskill orcompetence.
Starting from a closed position with a handle 22 locking the lowerframe bar ofthe openable panel to the fixed frame, the handle only has to be turned in order to free the lower bar ofthe window 2, with the lower bar ofthe windowframe being pushed outward lyto openthewindowwhich, undertheweight thereof, moves downwardly and is extended autardly.
The rollers 7 move downwardly along the ramp surfaces of the keeper members 5 on each side ofthe openable window 2 (see Fig . 5),the strut members 16 come to bearagainstthe recess 17 (see Figure 6), the members 12 slide in their slideway 8, the rampbearing stop member 14 engages in the aperture 9, with its ramp surface 23 being oriented upwardly, so as to permit the return upward and closure move ment, andthecatch portion 24thereof being oriented downwardly, thus locking the movement ofthe member 12 in a downward direction. The window is then in the service open position.
To close the window, the handle 22 simply has to be pulled inwardly. The ramp surface 23 slides towards the upper part of the aperture 9 and causes a return upward movementofthe stop member 14which is retracted on the slideway 8, the lateral arms 1 push the window 2 upwardly, and the rollers 7 move back upwardly along the apertures 6 (see Figure 5) and cause the upper part of the openable window to be clampinglyapplied, bythestrut member 16 (see Figure 4), against the corresponding part of the fixed frame, and the lower bar of the window frame 2 merely has to be locked by means of the handle 22 in orderto close the window.
For the purposes of cleaning the outside face of the window 2, the window is first put into the service open position, so that access to the screws of the stop members 14isthen possible and the screws simply have to beturned by means of an Allen key and setto the notch N (cleaning) to permitthe window to be put into the cleaning open position. The ramp surfaces of the stop members 14 are directed downwardly and permit free movement of the members 1 2 which move down until the shoe 13 bears againstthe element 11 (see Figure 7),thereby locking againstfurtherdownward movement. The catch portion 24 locks the movement in an upward direction ofthe member 12 which is automatically blocked in position. The window 2 is then in an open positionforcleaning and is locked in that position. To return the window 2 to the closed or service open position, it is sufficient to turn the stop member 1 through 180 , which permits free upward movementofthe member 12, the catch portion being turned downwardly, permitting the stop member 14to slide upwardly out ofthe aperture 10.
The window is successively returned to the service open position or the closed position, as described hereinbefore.
In alternative forms of invention, it is possible to use lateral arms of variable height and to determine the position of their point of pivotal connection to the fixed frame in order to have desired angles of inclination of the window in the service and cleaning open positions. For the same purpose, it is possibleto vary the distance between the apertures in the slideway, and likewisetheirpositionwithrespectto the slideway.
