Abstract

1,134,461. Windows and door frames; stays; releasable fastenings. HEINZ SCHURMANN & CO. 6 Jan., 1966 [7 Jan., 1965; 4 Aug., 1965], No. 583/66. Headings E1J, E2A and E2F. A closure for an aperture in a wall comprises a wall or main frame 8 Fig. 6, and a leaf (door or sash) 10 rotatable about an axis adjacent a peripheral edge thereof and a continuous gap being provided between the peripheral edges of the frame 8 and leaf 10 when in the closed position, the gap accommodating pivots and locking control mechanism 45, 50, 51, 52 mounted on the leaf and operated by a single handle such as 32, Fig. 21, so that the peripheral edge of the leaf adjacent the axis of rotation is moved inwards into the main frame when the leaf is opened. The gap between the leaf and frame is closed by metal, plastics &c., sealing strips 5, 6, Fig. 6. The strip 5 on the outside being set back relative to the outer coplanar surfaces of the main frame and leaf to define a groove therebetween. The groove has a strip bar 10 partly overlapping the mouth of the groove. The free end of the sealing strip 6 engages a ridge on the main frame. The interior surface 8 of the main frame is inclined so that condensation water flows towards the lower outer corners 9 for drainage. The embodiment described is a window having alternative rotation motions about a side vertical axis and about a bottom horizontal axis, the mechanisms for effecting and selecting such motions being mounted within the said gap between the frames and mounted on the sash. To this end one universal pivot 14 Fig. 8 serving as bottom and side hanging pivot is secured by a bracket 15 to the sash by screws 16, at one lower corner, say the left and at the lower right hand corner is a second bearing bracket 22 Fig. 12 having a lobe 24 which cooperates with a ramp 25 secured to the sash 1 as the second pivot for the bottom hung sash motion which is controlled by a system of stays 45, 50, 51, 52 Fig. 6 secure between the top of the sash and the confronting side of the main frame. Associated with the bearing bracket 22 is locking tennon 30 forming part of a plastics plate 33 having a projecting limb 34 which through a roller 35 cooperates with a locking element on the main frame and is operated by an operating rod 31 connected to the plate 33 by a pin 39. The other pivot for the side hung motion comprises a pivot bearing bracket 40, Fig. 14, mounted on the main frame and is coupled to the sash by locking through the medium of locking rail 48 the stay system which has the lever 45 rotatably mounted thereon, to the sash. This locking of the stays system to the sash and the unlocking of the sash from the main frame by mechanism 31-39, Fig. 12 is effected by a V-shaped handle 32, Fig. 21, coupled to the locking mechanisms by corner transmissions, coupled to bars 48 and 31. The sides of the V act as stops in relation to the sash on which it is mounted to position the coupling rods secured thereto by pins 77, 78, through fork 74 and pin 75 so that in the position shown the window sash is conditioned for bottom hung motion, the tennon 30 being then in its locking position as regards side hung motion of the sash and the locking of the stays system being released to allow bottom rung motion. In the intermediate position of the pin 75 when the fork 74 is horizontal, the window is closed and the stays and tennon in their locked conditions. In the upper position of pin 75, the stays are locked and the tennon 30 released for side hung motion of the sash. Details of alternative locking mechanisms are described in relation to Figs. 25-26 and Figs. 27 and Fig. 28 (not shown).
