Abstract

A three wing door has a first side wing 2, a middle wing 4 and a second side wing 6. The first side wing 2 and the middle wing 4 run in the same vertical plane and have meeting edge portions 12, 16. The middle wing 4 has a longitudinal hook formation 26 which is interengageable with a complementary hook formation 28 formed along the adjacent stile 30 of the second side wing 6. In the closed position of the door, the meeting edge portions 12, 16 as well as hook formations 26, 28 are interengaged. Wing 4 is mounted to slide so as to overlie the second side wing 6. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Three-winged door or window assembly This invention relates to a three-winged door or window assembly in which at least one wing may slide between an open position and a closed position in which meeting stiles of the wings may be interlocked.
A three winged sliding patio door is known.
Each wing is a glazed frame made of aluminium extrusions. In the known door assembly two spaced apart side wings occupy a first plane and between the side wings, a middle wing is disposed for sliding movement in a closely adjacent second plane, which is parallel to the first plane. The middle wing has a lock stile on one side for cooperation with a shutting jamb, in the form of an aluminium extrusion secured between the head and sill of the door frame in which the wings slide. The shutting jamb provides the means by which the middle wing can be secured in its closed position. The shutting jamb is also cooperable with a closing stile of the side wing which is adjacent thereto. The middle wing, on the side opposite the lock stile, has another stile which is cooperable with a closing stile of the side wing which is adjacent to that side of the middle wing.
The main disadvantage of the known arrangement is that, as mentioned, the shutting jamb is securable only at its opposed end portions between the head and sill of the door frame. For this reason, the shutting jamb is prone to lateral flexing movement during closing or locking movements of a cooperating stile.
This invention provides a three winged door or window assembly as claimed in Claim 1 hereof.
By providing interengaging hook formations along one edge of the slide middle wing and along the adjacent edge of the second side wing, which interengages secure the wings in the closed position, the use of a shutting jamb is avoided.
The meeting edges may comprise complimentary interengaging formations, for example a tongue and groove arrangement.
This feature improves security and weather tightness of the assembly.
The invention will be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing showing, in part, a horizontal section of a three winged patio door assembly.
Referring to the drawing, a first side wing, shown generally by 2, and a middle wing 4 are slidably mounted in a common vertical plane by means not shown. The wings 2 and 4 are provided with extruded aluminium meeting stiles 10, 14 respectively. The stile 10 is formed with a protruding tongue 12 adapted to be received in a complimentary groove 16 provided in stile 14, constituting meeting edge portions. In the closed position of the assembly as shown, sealing between the tongue 12 and groove 16 is effected by means of seals 36. The second side wing, shown generally by 6, is supported in a vertical plane parallel with the plane occupied by the wings 2 and 4. The wings 2, 4 and 6 are each generally rectangular frames having double glazing panels 8.The middle wing 4 is slidable, in the direction of the arrow, to overlie the second side wing 6 whereby the tongue and groove 12, 16 may be moved either together or apart.
The middle wing 4 has, opposite to the meeting stile 14, a further stile 24, along an edge portion of which is provided a hook formation 26. The adjacent stile 30 of the second side wing 6 is formed with a complimentary hook formation 28.
The hook formation 26, 28 are disposed on the facing surfaces of the stiles 24, 30, respectively. This arrangement enables the hook formations 26, 28 to be interengaged, as shown in the drawing when the meeting edge portions, constituted by tongue 12 and groove 16 are engaged together.
The first side wing 2 has a stile 18, opposite the meeting stile 10, formed with a longitudinal groove 20 adapted to receive a tongue 22 formed in the extruded fixed frame side member 38.
The second side wing 6 has an outer stile 32 received in a groove 34 formd in the fixed frame side member 38a.
1. A three winged door or window assembly comprising a first side wing, a middle wing, and a second side wing, the first side wing and the middle wing having meeting edge portions, the middle wing being slidable to overlie the second side whereby the meeting edge portions may be moved together and apart, the middle wing having a hook formation along the edge portion opposite the meeting edge portion thereof the hook formation being interengageable with a complimentary hook formation disposed along adjacent edge portions of the second side wing, the arrangement being such that the hook formations are interengaged when the meeting edges are moved together.
2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the meeting edge portions are complimentary interengageable formations.
3. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the first side wing and the middle wing occupy a common plane and the second side wing occupies a parallel adjacent plane.
4. An assembly substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

CLAIMS
