Abstract

Fire - bars a n d grates.-The adjacent surfaces of fire-bars a r e machined o r otherwise finished so as to have close contact and are formed with recesses such as E constituting conduits through which a current of pressure fluid is passed. With this construction any fine fuel dropping through from the fuel bed is collected and discharged at one end of the grate into a receptacle and in addition the grate is cooled and any downblow between the bars prevented. In the arrangement shown, the reciprocating main bars B are of trough form carrying a removable top surface D, and are maintained in close contact by a spring C bearing on a side plate A. A number of recesses may be provided instead of one and the lowermost may be packed e.g. with asbestos cord. The pressure fluid employed is preferably cold air but a mixture of steam and air or flue gases or any other suitable gas vapour or liqnid may be used.
