Description
SPECIFICATION
Axially adjustable steering wheel for vehicles
The invention relates to an axially adjustable steering wheel for vehicles.
In order to allow the height of the steering wheel to be adjusted to the physical height or size of the person driving the vehicle, many arrangements have already been proposed. In particular, axially adjustable steering columns with an axially displaceable steering shaft have been described, the two parts engaging telescopically in one another. In these previously proposed arrangements, described for example in German laid-open Specifications Nos. 15 55 648; 2557013and2511 901 and in published
German Specification No. 2611 139, it is disadvantageous that the steering column can be only adjusted with difficulty even after a relatively short time owing to the entry into the arrangement of particles of dirt.In addition, the dead weight of the steering column is increased to a not inconsiderable extent, and the production of such steering columns involves considerable expense.
It is an object of the present invention to develop a steering wheel which can be adjusted in height in a simple manner and which at the same time is adequately reliable in operation and is easy to maintain.
According to the present invention there is provided a steering wheel for a vehicle and adapted to be mounted so as to be axially displaceable on a steering column, comprising a polygonal section element, means for securing said element to the end of the steering column, a steering wheel hub to the steering wheel, the hub being formed with a bore of polygonal shape complementary to the sectional shape of said element, the hub being mountable with a sliding fit on said element coaxially with the steering column, and means for clamping the hub to the element.
For reasons of manufacturing technique it is convenient if the polygonal profile or cross-section of the element is derived from an equilateral triangle or a square, such as are known for example from
German Industrial Standards DIN 32711 and 32712.
Preferably the means for clamping the hub to the element comprises a screwthreaded stud which can be pressed on to the nearer peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element and which is mounted rotatably in the hub. The stud may project into a groove formed in the peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element.
In order to allow the pressure force exerted by the screwthreaded stud on the opposite peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element to be distributed more satisfactorily over the peripheral surface, a slot is preferably formed in the steering wheel hub and extends approximately parallel to the corresponding peripheral surface ofthe polygonalsection element. By means of the screwthreaded stud projecting into this slot the thin wall which remains between the opposite peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element and the slot and pressable against the peripheral surface.
A still better distribution of the pressure force per unit of area in the common contact face between the peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element and the opposite surface of the thin wall of the steering wheel hub may be obtained by a pressure element arranged on the tip of the screwthreaded stud and inserted in the slot which is shaped to accommodate the pressure element.
Axial displacement of the steering wheel is simplified if a compression spring which surrounds the lower portion of the polygonal-section element is provided between the steering wheel hub and either a collar arranged on the lower edge of the polygonalsection element or a housing surrounding the polygonal-section element at its lower portion.
In order to enable the invention to be more readily understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate diagrammatically and by way of example, two embodiments thereof, and in which:
Figure 'is a longitudinal section through a sliding connection between a steering wheel hub and a steering column,
Figure 2 is a cross-section through the connection shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a modification thereof.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a steering wheel hub 4 formed with a bore 5 which is cylindrical in shape in the upper portion and polygonal in shape in the lower portion. The hub 4 is mounted in an axially displaceable manner on a polygonal-section element 3 which is substantially triangular in cross-section and which is fitted on to the upper end of a steering column 1, the element 3 being clamped on to the steering column 1 by means of a screwthreaded nut 2. The diameter of the cylindrical portion of the bore 5 is the same as that of a circle circumscribing the polygonal-section element 3. The axial displaceability of the steering wheel hub 4 is limited in the upward sense by a disc 6 which is clamped on the end of the steering column by a screwthreaded nut 2, and against which the end face of the polygonal-section element 3 abuts.A compression spring 7 is mounted between the steering wheel hub 4 and a housing 8 which surrounds the lower portion of the polygonal-section element 3 and is attached thereto. A slot 9 is formed in the wall of the steering wheel hub 4 and extends substantially parallel to the corresponding adjacent peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element 3. A screwthreaded pin or stud 11 which is mounted rotatably in the steering wheel hub 4 and which is provided with a knob 10, extends into the slot 9 and is engageable against a thin wall 12 formed between the slot 9 and the opposite peripheral surface of the polygonal-section element 3 for the purpose of pressing the wall against the peripheral surface of the element 3. The wall 12 is thinner at its end regions than in the central region, in order to obtain a membrane effect and increase the flexibility of response to pressure from the pin 11.
Figure 3 shows a modified form of Figure 2 in S nressure element 17 situated on the tip of a screw-threaded stud 15 provided with a rotary knob 14 is arranged in a slot 13, this slot being illustrated on an enlarged scale.
With the present steering wheel construction, the polygonal connection between the steering wheel hub and the steering column allows simple and rapid axial displacement of the steering wheel, this displacement being influenced in a positive way by the compression spring on which the steering wheel hub bears. In addition, such a steering wheel is particularly suitable for subsequent fitting in vehicles.
