Abstract

776,357. Steering vehicles. CAM GEARS, Ltd. May 12, 1955 [May 12. 1954], No. 13954/54. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXIV] A steering gear has separate members forming the male and female parts of a connection wherein the male part has a cross-sectional shape presenting a number of smoothly merging facets disposed about its axis, the female part having an opening with a corresponding profile (see Group XXIV). As applied to a telescopic steering column, an inner shaft 19, Figs. 4, 5, and an outer shaft 18 axially split at 20, are locked together by a surrounding clamp 21 and a bolt 22. A groove 23 is cut out from the inner shaft 19 for the bolt 22. The end of the shaft 19 may be tapered as at 15 to receive the hub of the steering wheel non-adjustably, or alternatively it may be splined. If it is desired to adjust the steering wheel axially on the steering column 2, Fig. 7, the end 17 of the steering column is given a non-tapering shape with a cross-section according to the invention, and the hub of the steering wheel is formed with a corresponding opening to enable it to slide on the end part 17 to the desired position, where it is locked by a clamping bolt on the hub.
