Abstract

204,600. Gwynnes Engineering Co., Ltd., and Roberts, S. Dec. 7, 1922. Ball - and - socket joints. - To eliminate the wearing of the working faces of a pipe ball-joint used for conveying grain or other more or less solid material, the joint is fitted with a liner, seated in the socket and extending into the ball a distance equal to or greater than half the diameter thereof, the free end of the liner being provided with a part spherical surface adapted to fit the interior of the ball. A thin tubular shank a is adapted to seat itself in an annular recess b in the ball-socket c and extends into the interior of the ball e. The shank is tapered at f to allow the required degree of rotation of the ball, is internally flared at its free end and has a part spherical surface g adapted to fit the interior of the ball. The ball is retained in position by the usual flanged ring h and packing i. The liner may be in one piece and of white iron, india-rubber &c., or may be part metal surmounted by an india-rubber ring g<2>, furnished for example with a dove-tail projection g' fitting into a recess f<2>.
