Abstract

469,840. Pipe joints. DORMAN & CO., Ltd., W. H., and HUBBALL, C. W. March 16, 1936, No. 7835. [Class 99 (i)] In a ball-and-socket pipe joint fluidtightness is secured by a lipped packing 8 mounted on the front portion of the ball member 4 and a second packing 7 on the rear portion thereof, both packings having part spherical seatings which fit the ball member and the arrangement being such that they remain stationary in the socket 1 when the ball member moves angularly thereto. Adjustment of the packing 7, which may be split diametrically to facilitate fitting, is effected by a threaded ring 2, and an interposed thrust member 6 having a conical face 6a coacting with a like face 7a on the packing, and a heel ring 5, formed with a series of radial slots 5a, is located between the socket and the packing 8 for supporting the latter. The ball seats on a spherical surface 1a of the socket, and it may be secured to a nipple 3 by expanding the latter into a groove 10 therein.
