Abstract
203,574. Cocking, W. A., and Hean, W. E. Nov. 4, 1522. Blocks acting on drums; compensating for wear.-In brakes of the kind comprising a pair of shoes within a drum, a, cam disposed between the one ends of the shoes for applying the shoes to the drum and a second cam disposed between the other ends for taking up wear, the second cam is free to slide transversely or float upon the pin by which it is actuated so that the unequal adjustment of the two shoes which is sometimes necessary is provided for. The adjusting cam as shown in Fig. 3 comprises a rectangular plate 20 mounted so as to be free to slide in a diametral slot 19 in the end of the pin 18 which has a bearing in a boss 16 on the axle casing 4. To lock the pin 18 in the adjusted position a serrated washer 27 non-rotatable on the pin is adapted to be engaged by a nut 29 with a serrated plate 25 fixed by a slot 34 and projection 35 to the boss 16. The adjusting cam may instead comprise a piece of flattened tube 33, Fig. 4, mounted free to slide upon the squared end 30 of the pin. The usual operating cam for the shoes is shown at 10, Fig. 1.
