Abstract
In generating checking signals for locating faults in a digital transmission system, having a predetermined frame bit period length, by means of loop switching in intermediate regenerators of the system, a test signal is scrambled before transmission as are other signals for transmission in order to enhance the energy distribution in the transmitted signal. Problems then exist in generating an appropriate test signal by means of a multi-stage pseudo-random generator such that the test signal will be readily recoverable at the receiving end. A pseudo-random generator having a stages and a period of 2<a>-jbits is used to produce the test signal so that the checking signal period (with a predetermined scrambling mode) is equal to substantially a whole number of frame periods of the transmission system. The pseudo-random generator provides insertion of a frame code word into the test signal so as to avoid overlap with a loop closure command in the checking signal. <IMAGE>
