Abstract

In order to improve the resonance frequency-temperature characteristic of a resonator (51) for an electronic timepiece, the resonator (51) is arranged to have a plurality of different modes (52, 54) of vibration which are coupled to each other. As shown, a flexure mode (52) on the X'Y' plane is coupled to a torsional mode (54) about the central axis. Other specified couplings are thickness-shear/face-shear, thickness- shear/flexure, and two perpendicular longitudinal or flexural modes, and higher harmonics may be used. The required modes are achieved by appropriate crystal cutting angles and electrode arrangement. <IMAGE>
