Abstract
12,840. St. Armande, A. V. Sept. 8. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles ; soles.- The sole or lower portion of a shoe is rendered waterproof by the insertion, for instance between the inner and outer sole, of a sheet composed of a mixture of nitrocellulose and nitrated castor oil or other nitrated vegetable oil, preferably with the addition of a germicidal agent, such as #-naphthol. The Provisional Specification also states (1) that the nitrated oil may be partly replaced by ordinary castor or other oil, and that a thin solution of the material may be painted over the leather, (2) that the substance in liquid form may be applied to thin cloth, silk, or other material, which may then be introduced into the sole when wet or dry, and (3) that other substances such as pigments, dyes, resins, or metallic powders may be incorporated in the material.
