Abstract
16,661. Ruck, R. M. July 20. Variable-speed nd reversing gearng. - In variablespeed and reversing gearing of the type in which one element of an epicyclic train is driven at a constant speed while a second is variably driven so that a variable velocityratio is imparted to the third element, a sliding pinion, gearing with a cone made up of toothed rings side by side with one row of teeth in line for gear-changing purposes, is employed for controlling the second element. The gear is applicable for driving motor-vehicles, one ring on the cone corresponding to zero drive when the road wheels are locked against rotation. The pinion A, sliding on a square &e. portion of the engine shaft a, gears with the cone B mounted on an inclined shaft b. The shafts a, b are connected through bevel-gearing &c. with a sun-wheel L and with the planet - carrier K, respectively, of the variable epicyclic train. The wheel L is secured upon a sleeve J carrying clutch teeth j adapted to be engaged by teeth n<1> upon a double clutch N sliding loosely upon the sleeve J and remaining in driving-connexion through claws n with the driving- member C of the differential gear driving the partaxles C<1>, C<2>. When the clutch N is slid to the left, the member C is driven from the shaft a thr ugh the sleeve J at a high variable speed. The driven element M of the variable epicyclic train carries clutch teeth m adapted to be engaged by teeth n<2> upon the clutch N, so that, when the latter is slid to the right, the member C is driven variably through the element M. As the pinion A is n oved from the position shown, the speed of the member C diminishes until, when the pinion A gears with a ring of teeth such as B<16>, the member C is brought to rest and locked there. Further movement of the pinion A effects reversal. The engine is set free for starting &c. by moving the clutch N into a mid position. In a modified form, the cone B drives the wheel corresponding to the wheel L, and the pinion A and shaft a drive the planet-carrier K.
