Abstract
1318. Stanton, W. W. Jan. 20. Motor road vehicles.-An automatic change-speed and reversing driving - gear suitable for motorvehicles comprises in combination epicyclic toothed gearing and slipping clutch controlled by a centrifugal governor. The driven shaft B is in line with the driving-shaft A, upon the squared end of which there slides a toothed pinion a. For direct driving, the pinion a is slid into mesh with a wheel d secured to a countershaft D, which is carried by a revoluble casing C. A pinion d<1> fast on the shaft D is always in mesh with a wheel b fast on the shaft B. When driving begins, the gear acts as a reducing-train, the casing C being kept from rotating backwards by a ratchet clutch c. A clutch-cone G slides on a squared part of the shaft D and is adapted to engage an internal cone G<1> fast on the casing C. The shaft B carries a governor H adapted to act through a lever h upon the cone G in such a way that, as the speed of the shaft B increases, the casing C begins to rotate so as to increase the gear-ratio. The casing C rotates faster until the gear rotates solid. An increased load or a brake c' applied to the casing C reverses this process. A wheel d<2> and an idler F are provided for reversed driving, when the brake c' is also required.
