Abstract
5835. Lanchester, F. W. March 11. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to change gearing suitable for motor-vehicles, of the type in which three speeds and a reverse are obtainable from a single three-element epicyclic train, and comprises a form in which the driving and driven shafts are arranged end to end. The sun - pinion a, planet-pinions b, and toothed annulus c are connected to sleeves a<1>, b<1>, c<1>, respectively, extending in both directions. These sleeves carry positive clutchmembers a<2>, b<2>, c<2> on one side of the gear, and members a<3>, b<3>, c<3 >on the other side, respectively. The driving-shaft f carries a hollow clutch-member h having internally-projecting teeth i adapted to engage any of the members a<3>, b<3>, c<3> as the gear is slid longitudinally upon the driven shaft g. The shaft g has at one end a similar hollow member with internal teeth k, and at the other a hollow member j<1> with end teeth k<1>. Fixed toothed members l, m are provided for holding certain parts stationary. The high speed is effected through the two sleeves b<1> directly. For the second speed, the pinion a is held stationary by the member l, and the drive takes place from the member h through one sleeve c<1> and the annulus c<1> to the planet-carrier, and back through a sleeve b<1> to the members b<3>, j<1> and the shaft g. For the low speed, the pinion a drives, the parts b<1>, b<2> are driven, and the annulus c is held. For the reverse, the pinion a drives, the parts b<1>, b<2> are held, and the parts c, c<2> are driven.
