28,087. Oxford, A. J., and Buxton, S. H. Dec 22. Drying - kilns.- Semi-liquids, such as brewers' yeast and sewage, are dried on rotating cylinders arranged in a heated chamber. Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically a complete drying-apparatus. The material is fed by a conveyer d to a kettle or pan e, and passes thence by pipes to troughs i, which deliver the material to one or more horizontal cylinders g, h. The chamber is heated by a heating-apparatus c and provided with an extracting-fan and damper in the outlet flues. The troughs i are arranged to overflow on to the rollers g, h or are open to the cylinders on one side, as shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 3. The troughs are pressed against the cylinders by a spring o or the like. The troughs are so arranged that the material is carried at first by that portion of a cylinder which is hottest and from which the material is least likely to fall. Baffle-plates r, Fig. 1, are arranged as shown. The dried material is stripped from the cylinders by scraping-knives s or the like, which may be carried by the back portions of the troughs. The dried material falls into receivers t and may be removed by conveyers. Figs. 4 and 5 show modified arrangements of the troughs and scrapers. In Fig. 4, the troughs are shown arranged back to back. In Fig. 5, one trough is shown supplying both cylinders. The pan e may be fitted with a stirring device e' driven through bevel gearing by the conveyer d.
