Abstract
By hydrogenizing thymol under pressure of about 5-30 atmospheres in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel, cobalt, platinum, or palladium, a mixture of menthol and isomenthol is obtained, from which the menthol separates on cooling. The isomenthol remaining is dehydrogenized into menthone by the aid of a catalyst such as copper oxide or nickel oxide, and the menthone, alone or in admixture with thymol, is then hydrogenized under pressure to produce more menthol. The menthol obtained by the process has the properties of natural inactive menthol. According to the example, thymol is heated in an autoclave with hydrogen and nickel, the catalyst then removed, and the menthol isolated by cooling and centrifuging; the liquid isomenthol remaining is next heated with copper oxide to which an alkali has preferably been added, and the resulting menthone finally treated-either alone or mixed with thymol-with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst, the product being dealt with as before.ALSO:By hydrogenizing thymol under pressure in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel, cobalt, platinum or palladium, a mixture of menthol and isomenthol is obtained, from which the menthol separates on cooling.
