Abstract
The invention comprises di-p-tolyl methane hydroperoxide and 1 : 1-di-p-tolyl ethane hydroperoxide and their preparation by contacting di-p-tolyl methane or 1 : 1-di-p-tolyl ethane in a dispersed state with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas such as air at 90-150 DEG C. Preferably the reaction is carried out by contacting the hydrocarbon, which has preferably been pretreated by hydrogenation at 60-80 DEG C. in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst, in an aqueous emulsion, with a mixture of air and added oxygen at 50-100 atmospheres pressure, in the presence of a catalytic amount of the corresponding hydroperoxide. Suitably the initial stages of the reaction may be carried out at a higher temperature of for example 115 DEG C., which is lowered during the later stages of the reaction. Metallic silver may be present as a catalyst. The process may also be carried out by introducing oxygen into a vortex created by introducing the hydrocarbon tangentially into a reaction chamber such as is described in Specification 708,355, [Group II]. Examples are given.
