Abstract

188,327. Huhn, G. Oct. 31, 1922. Packing, removable casings for; packing, metallic.-An axiallydivided casing 3, for the packing of the piston-rod 1 of a highpressure steamengine, has a smaller external diameter than the bore of the stuffing-box, in order that the external pressure of the steam may assist in holding the halves of the casing together. The halves are also bolted together and the casing is formed with a flange 14, which is secured to the stuffing-box by bolts 17, packing 15 being inserted between the flange and the stuffing-box. Tapped holes are formed in the flange 14 for the insertion of withdrawing screws. The casing is divided by ribs or rings 9 into chambers 8, each containing a pair of segmental rings 10, 11 bevelled externally and acted on by wedge rings 12 compressed by springs 13.
