Abstract
793,099. Stuffing-box substitutes. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. Nov. 26, 1956, No. 36080/56. Class 122 (5). A packing arrangement for a piston-rod 8 or other shaft entering a cylinder 2 containing fluid under fluctuating pressure comprises a transverse wall 3 sealingly engaging the rod and an adjacent low-pressure chamber 4 sealed against external leakage along the rod by packing 6, and communicating with the cylinder 2 through a non-return valve 11 by which pressure build up in the chamber 4 due to leakage between the rod and the wall 3 is relieved by returning fluid to the cylinder during a lowpressure phase therein. The bore in the wall 3 may be lined with white-metal and the packing 6 may include a rubber ring 7.
