Grates; dampers.-Fire-bars are arranged on longitudinal bearers which form the sides of channels through which air is forced by steam injectors or other means, the bottoms of the channels being closed by hinged members, which may be turned downwards to allow a natural draught from the ash-pit to the fire-bars. As shown, the fire-bars b, spaced apart by the projections b<1>, are supported on the bars c arranged on edge lengthways of the furnace, forming channels f, some or all of which register with openings k through which air is forced. slats g are hinged to the outside bars c and are operated by the bar h, which is fitted with antifriction rollers running on inclined planes i, j at the front and rear of the furnaces. Antifriction rollers g<1> are fitted to the edges of the slats g which contact with the bar h. According to the Provisional Specification, the slats g may be mounted otherwise than hingedly.
