Abstract
184,437. Alexander Holding Co., (Assignees of Alexander, C. Z., and Alexander, E. S.). Aug. 11, 1921, [Convention date]. Vertical boilers; fire - boxes. - A boiler comprises a water-jacketed vertical fire-box 8 in the sides of which are cast vertical open ended tubes 39 communicating with the bottom of the fire-box jacket, heated water being discharged from the tops of the tubes over shallow ribbed evaporating surfaces 18, 17 heated by the furnace gases. The heated water passes first through annular zigzag passages 20 in the upper evaporating surface, and then through a central pipe 25 on to the lower evaporating surfaces formed with similar passages, the unevaporated water being conducted by pipes 28 back to bottom of the fire-box jacket. The steam passes through short tubes 22 between the chambers enclosing the evaporating surfaces, and is led off by a pipe 47. Tubes 23 place the top of the fire-box jacket in communication with the steam space 44. The outer surfaces of the vertical tubes may be surrounded by the water in the fire-box jacket. In a further modification, the sides of the tubes project into the fire-box, and are so cast as to form a bridge over the top of the fire-box.
