Abstract
173,973. Merz & McLellan, and Weeks, E. G. Jan. 4, 1921. Fuel, feeding; grates.-Apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 136,867 and 136,868, [Class 51 (ii), Furnaces and kilns for applying &c.], for heating fuel before it is fed to retorts,. furnace grates, &c., comprises a chamber 1 in which gases at a temperature insufficient to cause appreciable decomposition are passed upwardly from a flue 10 through a layer of fuel on a perforated travelling conveyer 4 fed from a hopper 7. Gases escape through the outlet 2. Fine fuel falling through the conveyer and the larger portions of fuel passing over the end of the conveyer fall into the hopper 8 and pass through the conduit 9 into a retort. The lower end of the conduit 9 may be provided with a screw or plunger fuelfeeding device such as described in Specification 149,733, [Class 51 (ii), Furnaces and kilns for applying &c.]. The upper part of the chamber 1 is lined with a non-corrodible covering 12. The apparatus described above may be modified for application to a travelling chain grate or, as shown in Fig. 3, the conveyer on which the fuel is preheated may form part of the grate 22. Instead of the fine fuel passing through the conveyer being fed direct to the grate, it is removed from the bottom of the chamber 1 by a conveyer 24 and discharged into a water tank. The heating gases pass from the flues 18, 19 to the lower part of the chamber 1 and escape through the outlet at the top to the flues 20, 21.
