Abstract
307,918. Trent Process Corporation, (Assignees of Trent, W. E.). March 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Coking processes.-Finely-divided fuel is continuously distilled and gasified by being passed in a column through a heating zone containing heated pipes, steam and air being admitted at the bottom of this zone, and distillation products and fuel gases being withdrawn at the top at different levels. Fuel from a hopper 34 is supplied to a retort 12 in which are tubes 18 opening into spaces 20 divided into compartments 20a - - 20h so that the heating gases from burners 24 are given a tortuous path to the outlet flue 72. Superposed sets of gas-withdrawal tubes 42 are provided, the upper one being used for removing air from the charge and the lowermost one for producer gas or water gas which may be mixed with the distillation gases, these tubes leading to a condenser 50. The hot residue falls into a water seal 52 from which the steam passes into tha charge to form water gas, air being supplied by pipes 90 for the generation of producer gas. The water seal has a number of conveyer shafts 54 with blades 56 which move the residue to another conveyer 58 discharging into a sump from which the ash &c. is discharged by an endless belt conveyer 62 into a pug mill 64 leading to an amalgamator 66 in which the ash constituents are separated in the manner described in Specifications 151,236, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &o.], and 159,497. The rate of heating the fuel is controlled by returning some of the relativelycool gases from the chambers 20h to the combustion chambers 3,0 by means of a return conduit 70 and pipes 75, and bye-pass dampers 80 are used for the same purpose. The tubes 18 and 42 may be covered with silicious material as described in Specification 292,535, [Class 99 (ii), Pipes, tubes, &c.]. Specifications 8187/05, 277,660, and 299,792 also are referred to.
