Abstract

An apparatus for distilling coal, wood chips, oil shale &c comprises an inclined stationary drum 1 containing a screw conveyer 2 the blades of which are perforated at 4 and carry cross baffles 5. Material to be distilled, preferably preheated, is introduced at 13 and passes down the drum 1 to an outlet 15 through the apertures 4, and hot treat transfer bodies, e.g. metal, refractory or ceramic balls, are introduced at 9 and are delivered by the conveyer to an outlet 6 for recirculating by gravity through a heater 7. Pyrolysis gases and vapours are led off at 14. The shale coke may be burnt at 16 to provide the heat for heater 7. <FORM:1017410/C4-C5/1>
