Abstract
170,846. Appelberg, C. Oct. 28, 1920, [Convention date]. Regulating delivery by opening suction valves; valve-gear.-In a fuel-pump for internal. combustion engines, the suction valve 3 is adapted to be closed during a portion of the delivery stroke by means of two independent members which are adjustable for the purpose of varying the movements of closing and opening the valve. In one form, the valve is controlled by two cams 11, 12 mounted on the pump shaft 7 and engaging two levers 15, 16, pivoted on arms 18, which are pivoted at 20 on the pump casing and can be adjusted by worm gearing 22. The lever 16 engages a lever 23 on which a shoulder on the valve rod 10 rests, and the lever 15 engages an extension of the valve rod through the lever 23. At the beginning of the delivery stroke, the cam 11 keeps the valve 3 open for a certain time, and towards the end of the stroke the cam 12 again opens it and keeps it open till the end of the suction stroke. By adjusting the levers 15, 16 relatively to the cams by means of the wormgearing 22, the amount of injection and the quantity of fuel injected may be varied. Instead of adjusting the levers, the cams may be angularly adjusted on the shaft for the same purpose, and the arm 12 may be loosely mounted on the shaft 7 and connected to the governor. In the Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the following modifications are described : the valve rod 10 rests on a lever pivoted on an adjustable eccentric, and this lever is operated by two eccentrically pivoted levers and connected by rods to the levers 15, 16 pivoted on an adjustable crank-arm. The moment of opening the valve may be varied by adjusting the eccentric pivot of one of the intermediate levers. In another form, the valve is controlled partly by a cam disc, and partly by a reciprocating member. The cam engages an eccentrically-pivoted lever connected by a rod to another eccentrically-pivoted lever engaging the valve rod. The latter lever is adapted to be actuated also by a lever pivoted on the rod of the piston-actuating eccentric and also on a rod which is eccentrically-pivoted on the pump casing. In another form, the valve is controlled by two reciprocating members, operated by the piston-rod of the pump, and adjustable by means of eccentric pivots to vary the operation of the valve. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
