Abstract

Double-acting piston pumps; regulating delivery by opening suction valves.-Each cylinder of an internal-combustion engine has two liquidfuel pumps which supply it with fuel under pressure alternately when the engine is running continuously in either direction. This admits of the plunger speed being sufficiently low to ensure the passage of the correct quantity of fuel into and from the pumps. In a casing 1 are two pump barrels 4, 5, delivery valves 7, 8, suction passages 9, 10, and suction valves 11, 12. The plungers 13, 14 are reciprocated by a rocking lever 17 pivoted to a bracket 19 on the casing 1 and oscillated by the rod 23 of an eccentric 21 on the cam shaft 22. The suction valve rods 15 are reciprocated by a rocking lever 27 oscillated by a pin 28 on the rocking arm 17, and a governor acts on these valves by controlling the position 30 at which the rocking lever 27 is pivoted. The rod 21 carrying the pivot 30 slides in a guide 32 and is operated by a crank on a cross-shaft which is oscillated by another crank, the end of which bears against a sliding rod passing along the centre of the cam shaft and actuated by the governor.
