Air and vapour vents.-A pump a is provided on its suction side with a chamber c for the withdrawal of air from the liquid to be pumped. The chamber is mounted at the head of an inverted U-bend in the suction pipe d, and is connected by a pipe f to a vacuum pump g driven from the pump spindle b through worm gear. Admission to the pipe k from the chamber c is controlled by a float valve j. The air that collects in the chamber c is drawn off through the pipe f, and the pump a receives water almost free from air. A small-bore pipe h leads from the admission chamber of the pump a to the pipe f to clear away any air that may gain access to the admission chamber. In a modification, the chamber c is connected directly between the suction side of the pump and the suction pipe. The chamber is divided by a vertical partition w, Fig. 2, so that water passing to the pump must rise over the partition.
