Abstract
170,392. Coker, E. G. July 19, 1920. Spring balances.- Flat or curved plate springs designed by photo-elastic measure ments are used in spring balances. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the spring is made in symmetrical halves A, B varying in thickness to obtain as uniform stress as possible under load, the dimensions of the spring being determined by photo-elastic measurements. The load support D and the balance support C are secured bv screws and terminate in racks E. F engaging a pinion G. The movements of the pinion are transmitted to an indicating pointer O by means of a rod J and a quadrant M. In a modification the springs A, B are in compression, the load being supported in a pan at the top. In a further modification, Fig. 2, the springs are elongated transversely. Stops are provided to prevent overloading, for example, a link-and-pin device R, S, or stops T with adjustadjustable nuts T'.
