Abstract
By chlorinating toluene-o-sulphonic acid at a low temperature in aqueous solution, a mixture of 4-and 6-chlorotoluene-2-sulphonic acids is obtained; in dilute aqueous solution and preferably at a temperature not exceeding 65 DEG C., toluene-o-sulphonic acid or its 4- or 6-chloro-derivative is transformed into trichlorotoluene-2-sulphonic acids. Instead of the acids, their soluble salts may be employed as starting materials. The 6-chloro-toluene-2-sulphonic acid is separated from the 4-isomer by taking advantage of the lesser solubility of its salts in water. By hydrolysis of the chloro-compounds, chlorotoluenes are produced. The chlorotoluenes and their sulphonic acids may be oxidized to their corresponding aldehydes. According to the Provisional Specification, dichlorotoluene-2-sulphonic acids accompany the formation of the trichloro-acids.
