Abstract
Double calcium salts are prepared by treatment of calcium bromide with the calcium salts of polyhydroxymonocarboxylic acids derived from polyaldoses in equimolecular proportions. The salts are ground together or caused to react in aqueous solution. In a modification, polyaldoses are oxidized with calcium hypobromite in presence of calcium hydroxide, when the calcium bromide liberated from the hypobromite unites with the neutralized oxidation product. The double salts are useful therapeutically. According to the examples, (1) calcium bromide is ground, or dissolved in hot water, with calcium lactobionate; from its solution, it crystallizes out; (2) milk sugar is oxidized in aqueous solution with a mixture of calcium hydroxide and calcium hypobromite; on evaporation of the filtered solution, the double salt separates out; (3) from an aqueous solution of calcium bromide and calcium maltobionate, the double salt is isolated by evaporation under reduced pressure or by precipitation with alcohol.
