Abstract

168,785. Jardine, Sir E., and Watchorn, E. Sept. 15, 1920. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-To facilitate turning heavy machinery such as lace machines by hand, the hand-wheel A for turning the shaft C is provided with a boss consisting of an annular concentric casing A<1> mounted at B directly on the shaft C and at D on a fixed sleeve bearing E. Three toothed wheels G, H, J are disposed side by side within the casing A<1> and coaxial with the shaft C. The casing A<1> also carries a planet 'wheel L mounted on a shaft K capable of end movement and carrying a knob M which is protected by a circumferential rim P of the casing. The wheel L is always in gear with the middle wheel H, which is keyed to the shaft C and by pulling on the knob M it may be placed also in gear with the wheel G which is secured to the casing, the hand-wheel A being then locked to the shaft C. If the knob M is pushed in until a spring ball 0 registers with a groove N, the wheel L is placed in gear with the wheel J which is mounted on the sleeve E and has one tooth less than the wheel H, the wheel A being then connected to the shaft C by a reduction gear. In a modified form the wheel G is replaced by a dogclutch or the like.
